Muratorian Fragment is a late 2nd-century-CE (155-170)fragment of a Latin list of New Testament writings then regarded by Christians as canonical (scripturally authoritative).
It is widely thought that Caius, a disciple of Irenaeus, wrote the Muratonian Canon Fragment, abbreviated MCF. This is dated to about AD 170. The fragment is named after Muratoni, the man who discovered it. Both the beginning and end are missing.
The important points to note are:
- There was only four
gospels: [Matthew?, Mark?], Luke and John. - There was known book of church
history, called the Acts of the
Apostles. - Then the MCF mentions thirteen books written by Paul out of fourteen.
- There is one real epistle of Paul to
the Laodiceans, but there are forged epistles to Laodicea and
Alexandria by a Priest against Marcion. ( I think this indicates that There is also a Real alexandrians becauses some Church father had mentioned it and there exist a small text)
- It mentions Jude, and two epistles
of John, and the Revelation of John and Revelation of Peter. - It fails to mention Hebrews, James,
3 John, epistles of Peter, Epistle of Barnabas, Didache - It notes that they accepted the
- Revelation of Peter and the book of Wisdom.
- It accepts none of the False or forged texts .
Note about Author
Caius, also called as Gaius, was a
presbyter at Church Rome in the late second century. He wrote Many works against the major heresies of his day. Not much remains of his works, except he is thought by many historians to be the author of the Muratorian Canon Fragment.
Dating of text - It Refers that “shepherd of Hermas was written Recently during our time when bishop pius was having a chair“.
